DuFour and Marzano (2009) challenge principals to become “Learning Leaders.” The premise behind a learning leader is deeply rooted in the foundational belief that all students should be learning at high levels.  DuFour and Marzano outline many steps that school administrators can take to shift the focus from supervision to capacity building, for it is only through collaboration and teamwork that high student achievement can become a reality for all. I am on the journey of a “Learning Leader.” I would like to expand Ron Berger‘s “ethic of excellence in the classroom” (2003) to encompass a district of excellence.

The invaluable experiences I’ve had at the classroom, building, district, collegiate, and state level have provided me with the opportunity to build upon and refine my knowledge, skills, and expertise.  I helped lead school districts in their educational vision through work with evaluation teams, professional development teams, administrative teams, and groups of teachers and parents at all levels.  Goal setting, shared-decision making, and a firm commitment to best practice have complimented the standard of work and ethics that I hold myself and others to.  While collaborating to develop, communicate, and sustain school districts’ educational visions, I have built trust and credibility with many stakeholders.  In addition, I have assisted in managing change, making decisions, and ensuring accountability in efforts striving for high student academic achievement.

My mantra is an echo of my mentors.  I have internalized the following questions: “what is it we want students to understand, how will we help them to understand, how will we know when they understand, and what are our next steps whether understanding is accomplished and/or if it isn't? These questions are at the heart of every Learning Leader (DuFour and Marzano, 2009).
